Walking Tour of Tulpehocken Historic Neighborhood

Led by NVN member Steve Elkinton

ALL SPOTS FILLED - Please email Helene to be added to the waiting list

Monday, June 10, 10 a.m. (postponed from June 3)

OVERVIEW: Steve Elkington will lead an encore of his popular walking tour of Germantown’s historic Tulpehocken Neighborhood. Plan on about an hour of slow walking. We’ll outfit Steve with a microphone and speaker to make sure that everyone can hear.

Steve will distribute a handout about key houses and architects.  He is also happy to provide the handout to members who are interested but unable to attend.

WHAT: Many of the homes in the tour area were built from 1850-1900. Steve will review the variety of architectural styles used. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

WHERE: In the heart of the historic Germantown neighborhood, we’ll start the tour at the historic Wyck House, 6026 Germantown Avenue. We’ll meet by the Garden Gate along Wyck’s West Walnut Lane side. Parking on West Walnut Lane is plentiful.

LUNCH: Bring a picnic lunch. After the tour, we can picnic on the grounds of the historic Wyck House.

OUR HOST: Steve is an NVN member who moved to Philadelphia in 2014 after a 36-year career as a landscape architect and outdoor recreation planner with the National Park Service.  Steve has a lifelong interest in architecture and history which fuels his research into Germantown’s streetscape.

REGISTRATION: Please contact Helene Hilger at [email protected] by May 30 if you would like to attend. Note that we are limited to 12 members.
