Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers (WRV) began its community restoration program to save the Wissahickon forest in 1997, when the field of ecological restoration was new. WRV leaders based their plans on the fields of ecology, landscape architecture, horticulture, forestry, and community organizing. A quarter century later, restoration ecology is a full-fledged international discipline with thousands of practitioners. Steve Jones will talk about the actions that volunteer ecologists are currently taking in our beloved urban forest and ways we can support the effort.
Steve is a Board member of Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers and leader of WRV’s restoration planning. He also manages the native plant nursery for the environmental education non-profit Land Health Institute and serves as the President of the Philadelphia Botanical Club.
