Digging in the City of Brotherly Love: Stories from Philadelphia Archaeology, presented by Rebecca Yamin

Monday, March 25, 3:00 PM, Lovett Library, 6945 Germantown Ave.

“…longtime West Mt. Airy resident Rebecca Yamin is an “urban archaeologist” and author who gets just as excited about digging into Philadelphia sites as Eagles fans do when the Birds beat the Dallas Cowboys…” [Len Lear, Chestnut Hill Local, 11/30/23]

Archaeology in cities is complicated and surprising, complicated because the urban landscape is subject to so much change and surprising because so many remnants of the complicated past remain in the ground.  Old backyards are filled up with new buildings and thousands of artifacts percolate up out of holes in the ground that were once privies, wells, or cisterns. Digging in the City of Brotherly Love uses the remains to tell stories about people in Philadelphia’s past and provide insights into otherwise unknown populations.

Rebecca Yamin is a retired historical archaeologist who specialized in urban and landscape archaeology.  She directed excavations on numerous sites such as the Liberty Bell Center.  Ms. Yamin has a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University.
