An Invitation to Playwright Lorene Cary’s Ladysitting: Monologue, Dialogue, and Discussion
NVN members have been invited to a special livestreamed event at the Kelly Writers House focusing on Ladysitting, a play by Lorene Cary making its premiere at the Arden Theatre. The event will feature a short reading of excerpts from the play, followed by a discussion with Lorene Cary and at least one actor, hosted by Arden’s Producing Artistic Director Terrence Nolen. Attendees can take part in a question and answer period.
Lorene Cary, American author, educator, and social activist, may be best known for her memoir Black Ice, books such as Price of a Child, and the play My General Tubman - produced by the Arden Theatre in 2020.
In 2019 Cary’s memoir, Ladysitting: My Year with Nana at the End of Her Century, was published. This memoir explores the life and last year of Cary’s Nana, a fiercely independent woman who needs the care of others. The play captures the ruptures, love, and forgiveness that can occur in family as the book journeys through five generations of their African American ancestors and bears witness to her grandmother’s 101 vibrant years of life.
Cary’s dramatic adaptation of Ladysitting was commissioned by the Arden Theatre.

Plans are being made for NVN members to attend an Arden matinee performance on Saturday, February 24, 2:00 pm at the reduced group rate of $26.
